Shap History Society - Current Projects
Cumbria Dated
Structures Project
This survey is being carried
out by history societies and other organisations throughout Cumbria
to record date stones. It is being done for two reasons -
to assist people with genealogy and family history research and
to make a record of vernacular structures in the county.
Members of the History
Society are currently gathering information for this project. The
date stones can be from any period and may be on a house or an attached
building, built into a wall or on a bridge, or other structures
such as lead guttering and down pipes from rainwater systems, and
includes 'graffiti' on walls - marks made by builders or masons.
War memorials are also included.
The survey also includes
dates inside buildings - on mantelpieces, built in cupboards or
elsewhere.
We would like to take
photographs of all the date stones in the Parish, but will ask permission
wherever we can. We also have a short form to complete with further
details. When the survey is finished the information will
be kept by the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological
Society.
If you would like any further information
please contact the secretary Liz Amos liz@amosshap.demon.co.uk
or telephone her on 01931 716244
